Vermicelli upma Recipe

Upma is a traditional breakfast in South India.There are many varieties of upma.
Vermicelli upma made with semiya (Vermicelli),spices and with your choice of vegetables, is a quick,simple, healthy, delicious recipe.
You can make vermicelli upma in different ways, by adding veggies and without veggies.Adding vegetables will increase the flavour.

Vermicelli                 -1 cup
Urad dal                    -1tsp
Dried red chillie       -2
Mustard seeds        -1 tsp
Bengal gram            -1 tsp
Turmeric powder    -1/2 tsp
Onion                       -1
Carrot                      -1
Greenchillies          -3
Curry leaves           -1tsp
Corriander leaves  -1tsp
Peanut                    -2tsp
Salt to taste
Oil                           -3 tbsp


1.  In a pan add 1 tbsp oil and roast       vermicelli in low flame until golden in color.
Note :skip this step by using roasted vermicelli.

2. In a vessel, boil water add a pinch of salt and roasted vermicelli until vermicelli turns soft.then drain off water.
3.Remove and in  same pan ,heat oil and add mustard seeds after spluttering of mustard seeds then add bengal gram,urad dal,peanut,dried red chillies and curry leves and saute well .

4.then add chopped onion,greenchillies,chopped carrots.
You can add  peas and your choices of veggies at this time.

5. Saute well by adding turmeric powder and salt for 2 minutes.

6.Now add boiled vermicelli ,mix slightly til coated with spice mixture.

7. Cover the pan with lid  and turn off the flame. Then add chopped corruander leaves.
